Hi, Megan! Let’s begin with a little introduction: tell me who you are, the place you call home, and the space you work within!

Bella, I’m so thrilled to connect with you and this community. Hopefully my passions bleed through these words and spark a little joy.

Born in the mountains of Idaho, I grew up playing in wild spaces and had trouble differentiating showers from lakes. The culture of the outdoor community is woven in my DNA. Undoubtedly, living acclimated to fresh air makes me biased. I have an iron in the fire and am committed to fight for the areas that inspire—for clean water, for mountains, and powder days.

Intertwining my passion for the outdoors with my background in public relations is where I do my best work. Through formal education, exploration of diverse landscapes, and inspiring mentors in the field, I’ve grown to understand how story and connection serve as lifelines to our community.

Through community outreach in the outdoor industry, educational programming, guiding, and a whole lot of playing—I’ve found inspiration in the inextricable connection between the health of our natural spaces and the health of our communities. I’m not sure you could call it a 9-5 but telling stories of wild spaces and soulful people is the most rewarding job I’ve ever had.

Let’s dive into your story of being in the outdoors. How did that connection grow into fruition and what experiences in the outdoors bring you the most joy?

Growing up, my biggest influence was part cowboy, part surfer, part motorcycle rider, and part dad. I was raised on gas station coffee, sunrises, and mishap. He would always tell me that the adventure didn’t really begin until something went wrong—and I consequently began to fall in love with the art of finding joy in unlikely places.

Even though I grew up with that thirst for adventure— I’d never felt so connected to our wild spaces until I began climbing in them. Not to be prophetic, but I think sometimes we get lucky and stumble upon things that make us feel like our truest selves. We find a niche, where we can be inspired, motivated, and challenged all at once.

To explore so many stunning landscapes, accompanied by graceful movement, problem solving, and risk taking has been such a blessing in my life. Ultimately, climbing has provided a way to connect with myself and my community more deeply. The lessons I’ve learned through the sport foster a stronger appreciation for other passions (insert plug for biking and skiing) and have taught me a lot about perseverance and the pursuit of joy.

Tell me about your passion for the intersection of the outdoors and storytelling!

This answer is pretty straight forward in my mind. Protecting the places we play requires others to care about them. The privilege of living in this mesmerizing corner of the world comes with a responsibility to protect it. Through that lens, I believe that story is our strongest currency. Story connects disparate communities and empowers others to take action on the things that move them. A well told narrative has the ability to redefine boundaries, spark empathy, and create common ground.

In a world that often feels abundantly complex, the opportunity to remind people of little wonders feels a lot like magic. I’m not great at science, so creating meaningful content and showcasing raw experiences is the closest I could get to inventing a, Breath-of-Fresh-Air-Pill. (Frequent doses recommended).

Tell me about the work you are currently doing in the outdoor industry!

I’ve spent the past half decade bouncing between Western towns, connecting with communities, and working in the outdoor realm. Rather it’s guiding, freelancing, or hosting events and workshops, I find joy in each corner of the outdoor industry. To mention a few specifics, my work with REI Co-Op and Avid4 Adventure have been impactful and engaging ways to give back to outdoor spaces. Through non-profit outreach and outdoor education, I feel that my passions are utilized as a springboard for action and growth within the industry.

What books and podcasts are you enjoying as of late?

Besides Sage? Tough question.

As far as podcasts go, The Dirtbag Diaries is curated by my idols at Duct Tape Then Beer and they cover a wide variety of outdoor related stories. For those looking for climbing specific content, The Enormocast hosted by Chris Kalous captures the spirit of climbing culture and is my top consumed podcast. Also, a special mention for 99% Invisible hosted by Roman Mars because it’s simply well produced and fascinating—10/10 recommend!

My favorite leisure read this year was As Above, So Below: A Climbing Story (Kalman, 2019). It’s a beautiful hardbound book, that’s thought provoking and extremely well written. In the realm of business and creativity, I was inspired by Make It Till You Make It: 40 Myths and Truths About Creating (Leonard, 2016).

Thank you so much for chatting with me, Megan! You are such a power for good. Lastly, for those looking to follow along with your content and support you, where can they find you?

Hopefully on the skin track, trailhead, or crag—but if all else fails, connect with me @megannmcdevitt on Instagram!
